Donations Continue to Roll In for Marshall Medical's Mammography Assistance Program
GUNTERSVILLE, ALABAMA – February 27, 2012 – “Three great donations in thirty days,” says Andrea Oliver, director of the Foundation for Marshall Medical Centers. “This has been a good month for the Foundation and the Mammography Assistance Program!”
The Foundation for Marshall Medical Centers took on the responsibility of fundraising for the Mammography Assistance Program (MAP) in 2010 after the program spread from just the Marshall North campus to Marshall Medial Center North and South. The purpose of the program is to provide mammograms to women who cannot afford them. In 2011 alone, over 100 mammograms were provided free of cost to Marshall County residents who qualified for assistance. As more funding comes in, Marshall Medical Centers will be able to do many more.
Three year breast cancer survivor, Bernice McKean, and Woody Resnick of the American Legion Riders Post 8 in Guntersville presented $1,046 in donations to MAP on Thursday. “We have about six breast cancer survivors in our group and we think Marshall Medical does a great job taking care of our community,” Resnick said. The Post 8 group held a bike run and silent auction this year to raise money for MAP and plan to do the same in October 2012.
Colette Click of Arab and a member of the Lakeside Quilters is no stranger to MAP. “Our group started the pilot program for MAP back in 2001 at Marshall North,” says Click. “We have been selling tickets for one of our quilts each year since to raise money for these women.” This year the Lakeside Quilters donated $800 to the continuation of the program and were excited that the program has expanded to be more accessible for all Marshall County residents.
The Albertville Fire Department also stepped up to plate – literally and figuratively – for MAP this past October. After selling pink t-shirts and hosting a softball game, they raised just over $2,150 for MAP which was 60% more than they contributed in 2010. Westley Bynum, Albertville’s Fire Marshal, commented that their department enjoys doing the fundraiser each year and likes to see the money going to a cause that directly benefits women in Marshall County.
In addition to these organizations’ donations, the Foundation hosts the Pink Pumpkin 5K Run each October as a fundraiser for MAP. In 2011, almost 800 runners gathered to run for the cause at Guntersville’s Civitan Park . The Third Annual Pink Pumpkin Run will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012. “Almost $4,000 was contributed in just 30 days by three very benevolent community groups,” comments Oliver. “This is the purpose of the Foundation for Marshall Medical Centers – to raise funds and awareness to bring a higher level of healthcare to our community.”
