GUNTERSVILLE, ALABAMA – May 17, 2012 – Marshall Medical Centers continue to enhance the services it provides by announcing the planning and construction of a state-of-the-art free standing cancer center to replace the Marshall Cancer Center currently located at Marshall Medical Center South. The two story 22,000 square foot facility will contain medical and radiation oncology services as well as nutrition and support counseling for cancer patients and their families.

“It became clear it was either time for us to update the existing center and equipment, or make the move to a more central location in the county where a state-of-the-art facility could be constructed,” says Gary Gore, CEO of Marshall Medical Centers. “The decision to build a new center was part of a strategy to deliver cancer care for the broader geographic area we serve.”

The new cancer center will be centrally located adjacent to the Marshall Professional Center (at 11491 Highway 431 in Albertville near Cracker Barrel). A team of cancer survivors, board members, volunteers and staff have worked for more than a year giving input for design of the new facility that will have a healing atmosphere combined with advanced technology for the treatment of cancer.

Cindy Sparkman, director of the Cancer Center explains, “Our goal is to provide the highest quality cancer care treatment available to the residents of Marshall County and surrounding areas. The design, functionality and new technology will offer a convenient location for high-quality cancer care services.”

Another important feature of the new cancer center will be its affiliation with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Cancer Care Network. UAB recently developed the Cancer Care Network to bring leading-edge care to non-metropolitan areas, giving patients an opportunity to stay close to home while giving doctors and nurses access to the latest discoveries in cancer research, resources and continuing education.
The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated a comprehensive cancer center in Alabama and the Deep South, and only one of 41 nationwide.

Dr. Tom Payne, radiation oncologist for Marshall Medical Centers, said, “We are excited to expand the cancer care offered to our patients, and pleased to have the opportunity to become an affiliate of the UAB Cancer Care Network.”

Dr. Payne, who has been a radiation oncologist for the Marshall Cancer Care Center since 2006, is looking forward to the move. He anticipates the new cancer center will have a positive impact on cancer care for residents in Marshall County and surrounding communities.

Dr. Gideon Ewing, a specialist in Hematology and Oncology, will join the Marshall Medical Centers’ team on June 1. Dr. Jonathan Storey, who specializes in Hematology/ Oncology, will start his practice at the current center in early July. The addition of Drs. Ewing and Storey will give Marshall Medical Centers hematology and oncology coverage seven days a week.

Apart from broader physician coverage, the new center will provide access to services currently not available at the existing center - including a nurse navigator to assist patients through the process of cancer treatment, support groups and dietary counseling. The building design features will include a naturally lit atrium entrance, business center, comfortable waiting areas for patients and families, resource café, conference room, radiation oncology, medical oncology and an infusion center with private and semi-private infusion bays overlooking a rooftop healing garden. Plans also include flexible space for future growth.

Construction is slated to begin in July, with the project completion expected by July 2013. Marshall Medical estimates the costs for the new plan to be around $9 million.

“When complete,” says Gore, “the new Marshall Cancer Care Center will unite state-of-the-art treatment opportunities with the convenience of one central location and the respected quality of care that residents have come to expect from Marshall Medical Centers.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 14. Details about this commemorative event will be released when planning for the event is complete.
