Farm Fresh employees raise $1,800 for Marshall Cancer Care Center

From selling shirts to throwing pies, local poultry workers worked hard to show their enthusiastic support for local cancer care.

Workers at a local poultry processing plant wanted to join the fight against breast cancer but they had to get creative to raise money to give. And they did! Not only did the Marshall Cancer Center get a very nice donation, the company is rewarding the effort by providing free mammograms for female employees age 40 and above.

During October, employees of Farm Fresh Foods and M&E Processing in Guntersville wore pink every Friday. Because many workers do not speak English, members of management had to explain why pink represents breast cancer awareness. Despite the language barrier, excitement spread for the effort.

Employees sold shirts to raise money. They also came up with a fun way to get everyone on board – they threw pies in their manager’s faces! Cream pies were sold based on size for $1, $3 and $5. Altogether Farm Fresh workers raised nearly $1,800. In November, they presented their donation at the Marshall Cancer Care Center.

“We are so thankful to Farm Fresh Foods and M&E Processing for their support,” said Andrea Oliver, director of The Foundation for Marshall Medical Centers. “The interest they have shown by getting their own employees involved in fundraising for our patients speaks volumes about what a great community partner they are.”

Farm Fresh used its Facebook page to thank its employees for their generosity in raising awareness for breast cancer and for partnering with the Marshall Cancer Care Center with a post that said:

“We are very proud of the accomplishments we have done since the month of October and the donations that our employees have given for this cause.”

Free mammograms

Farm Fresh is giving back to its employees too, in the form of a birthday gift. The company has arranged for every woman aged 40 or above to get a free mammogram during their birthday month. All the employees have to do is fill out a registration form. The company will schedule the screening and transport them to Marshall Medical North or South. There will be no out-of-pocket expense for the women.

In announcing the program, Farm Fresh told its workers they want them to have many more birthdays.

“You are a valuable asset at Farm Fresh Foods and we want to be part of your healthy lifestyle and more birthday celebrations.”
